January 2022 NEWSLETTER
LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

Greetings,

We are looking forward to 2022 with you!

Within the first week of the new year, you will have three new eResources to use at any time and any place you have internet access. The first is LinkedIn Learning. Good news! You do not have to have a LinkedIn profile to access it. As a reminder, it offers video content for you to learn the latest software and business skills for any skill level. Learn through bite-size tutorials or comprehensive courses on hundreds of topics from 3D+Animation to Resume Writing and everything in between. For convenience, download the LinkedIn Learning app. The second one is PressReader. It offers desk-top access to 7,000 plus U.S. and international newspapers and magazines with content from 120 countries and in 60 different languages. Download the PressReader app for easy access. The third is U.S. Dailies, which provides access to the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune with coverage from the 1980’s to the present day. There is not an app for this one. Just access it when you login into your library account.

Andrew Carnegie said… “A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. It is a never failing spring in the desert.”  The benefit he references is about access to reading, to information and to life-long learning opportunities. I hope that if you know anyone who does not have a DSCL card, you will encourage them to get one, so they too can take full advantage of our extensive print and eResources and programs for all ages. The best to you in the new year!

 Take care,

Marcia Atilano, Library Director

January is Jigsaw Puzzle month!

Exercise “Your Little Grey Cells” – Give Puzzles a Try!

Jigsaw puzzles are not only fun but are an excellent indoor exercise for those brain cells. Drop by the Kid’s Area during January and help complete the jigsaws. Adults, families & kids are welcome to the table.

Studies have shown that doing jigsaw puzzles can improve cognition and visual-spatial reasoning. The act of putting the pieces of a puzzle together requires concentration and improves short-term memory and problem solving.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early reading program which encourages parents and caregivers to provide early learning experiences by reading aloud with their children ages birth to five. 1,000 Books sounds like a huge goal,
but this isn’t a race, you have until your child enters kindergarten to reach 1,000 books. Select books of interest and simply read aloud together. And yes, books read during storytime do count as do those “read it to me again and again” books.

Families are reminded of the special rewards waiting for them as each of the 100 book milestones are reached. Simply visit the library periodically with your child and ask for their reading rewards. When the 1,000 Book Goal is reached, your young reader receives a very special reward and a 1,000 Book Leaf they may add it to the library’s Reading Tree!

It is simple and easy to register and track books as you read together
...more.

The Friends of the Library are excited to announce that the date and location for 2022 Pouring Over Books has been set.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 27, 2022, at The Prospect House, and join us for beverages, bites, music, and a fun evening with a Texas author. Each year we have an auction featuring items from local businesses, art, gift certificates, and a marvelous assortment of gift baskets, too.

We think we have a commitment from a  very well-known Texas author...but we can't announce 'who' quite yet! Watch for the big news soon.

If your business would like to be a Sponsor please visit our website for all the details or email President@fodscl.org

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth during Christmas on Mercer. We sold nearly 20 boxes of books, more than 500 raffle tickets and raised over $1,000.00 for the library.

We're collecting more books for our next sale and planning way ahead, for our booth at Founder's Day.

If your used books are in great condition to donate, you can drop them off in the Big Blue Bin in front of the Sententia Vera Cultural Hub. We appreciate their ongoing support of all the Friends projects so stop in and get a cup of coffee while you're there.

And always, we welcome you to Join the Friends directly from our website. Your support makes it possible for the Friends to donate money to the Library each year, for programs and events, especially for children.
